Northeast United FC Clinches Its First Durand Cup Championship Title

Ukhrul: Northeast United FC made history by securing their first-ever major title with a decisive victory in the 2024 Durand Cup final against defending champions Mohun Bagan FC. The Highlanders created a historic moment as they claimed their first silverware on Saturday night in Kolkata.

The match turned from a 2-0 deficit to a dramatic triumph. The Mariners controlled the first half with early goals by Jason Cummings in the 11th minute and Sahal Abdul Samad in extra time. However, the game intensified when NEUFC struck back with two goals within two minutes in the second half—Alaeddine Alzaraie at the 56th minute and Guillermo Fernandez at the 58th—equalizing the score. The match ultimately went to a nerve-wracking penalty shootout, where NEUFC triumphed 4-3, securing a historic win for the Highlanders.

The Durand Cup is the oldest football tournament in Asia. The 2024 edition marks its 133rd year and is being played across different states in India.

Northeast United FC, based in Guwahati, Assam, and owned by Indian celebrity John Abraham, is the only club from the Northeast to play in the top flight of the Indian Super League (ISL). Their recent victory marks a significant moment in history for the “Seven Sisters” states, celebrated with a momentous game at Salt Lake Stadium.

NEUFC’s coach, Benali, stated before the Durand Cup 2024 final that Northeast United FC came to win and not just for a tour. He fulfilled his mission with a historic victory against the Mariners.
