NSA Hosted General Body Meeting, discussed Register of Indigenous Inhabitants of Nagaland

New Delhi: The Naga Scholars’ Association (NSA) said it convened a General Body Meeting on November 2 at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi, after a panel discussion on Register Inhabitants of Nagaland aimed to address critical issues surrounding the implementation and implications of the RIIN.

The NSA’s president, Dr. Kharingpam Ahum Chahong, chaired the session, with Dr. Apila Sangtam, NSA General Secretary, serving as co-chair of the GMB The meeting was attended by 28 members who engaged in thorough discussions on agenda points proposed during the meeting.

The agenda points, as per NSA were thoroughly discussed, leading to the following agreements by the house:

1. The NSA Executive Team proposed the selection of advisors for the NSA team for the term 2024-2027. The house unanimously agreed on the appointment of Professor Yaorigam and Professor ZuchamoYanthan as advisors. Dr. Nixon Ngoru will automatically serve as an ex officio advisor.

2. A proposal to increase the number of Executive Secretary positions from two to four or five was put forth, with suggested names including Akishe, Anna, and Shirin. The house agreed to this proposal contingent upon the workload needs of the NSA and recommended amending the constitution accordingly.

3. The house approved an amendment to the constitution stipulating that a Master’s degree is required to qualify for the Executive Council.

4. The selection of committee members, convenor, and co-convenor for the 2025/2026 conference was discussed, alongside plans for bi-monthly workshops and online panel discussions. An upcoming online discussion on the Free Movement Regime (FMR) was also planned. The house suggested transitioning from annual conferences to a convention held every three years to enhance visibility and quality.

5. It was agreed that the NSA journal should be a peer-reviewed publication, and a committee will be established to oversee its operations.

6. The house endorsed the NSA team’s project proposal for an Anthology of Naga Songs.

7. The meeting concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr.Aveivy, the Vice President of NSA.
