One Day Workshop & Training of Tamenglong CSOs on promoting traditional natural resources held

A one day workshop and training of Civil Society Organisations role in promoting traditional natural resources management practices was held today in Tamenglong HQ, at Peace Hall. During the program, Salam Rajesh Environmentalists Member Board of Wildlife Manipur, Nehemiah Panmei, Honorary Wildlife Warden Tamenglong and Mordecai Panmei, Director Rainforest Club Tamenglong (RCT) were the resource persons. While Ramkung Pamei, President Rongmei Naga Council Manipur and Kh Hitler, DFO Tamenglong were the program moderator and chief host respectively.

According to resource person, Nehemiah Panmei, there are plenty of indigenous plants and animals habitation found in the region including pangolins, orchids and various fish species. He recalled the time when our ancestors preserved the nature and its habitat by restricting hunting in certain seasons especially during mating season. But with the decline of such prestige culture and rise of population, natural resources have been destroyed to great extent, he lamented. He urged to revive the culture of preserving environment.

Speaking at the gathering, Mordecai Panmei, Director RCT shared his concern on two main water source for Tamenglong – Gadai hill and Joulen forest area. He grieved over the depletion of forest covered area and urged to preserve all forest cover area as a whole. He also mentioned that Forest products are our identity.

Salam Rajesh, Environmentalist also explained as to how much our environment and ozone have been depleted each passing year. He described in details means and methods of eco friendly plantation and cultivation and also elaborated on means to avail benefits from the government.

Over 40 representatives of various CSOs in the district attended the program. Interaction session with the resource persons were held where participants clarify their doubts.
