UKHRUL: The Hmar Students’ Association (HSA), Zomi Students’ Federation (ZSF) and Kuki Students’ Organisation (KSO) have jointly condemned the Churachandpur district administration after more than 50 students reportedly suffered heat stroke and dehydration during the Independence Day celebrations and were taken to the District Hospital for treatment.
In a joint statement issued on Saturday, the three student bodies alleged that students taking part in the march-past had been made to undergo practice for several days without adequate refreshments.
They further said that on Independence Day, the students were made to stand in the open under the scorching sun for hours, while VIPs were seated in shaded areas and provided with refreshments.

The student bodies said the situation resulted in more than 50 students falling ill and requiring hospitalisation.
They also questioned the absence of the district administration at the hospital after the students were admitted for treatment.
“What is particularly concerning is that the District Administration, Churachandpur, did not make any visit or extend any personal support to the hospitalised students,” the organisations said.
The three bodies said that while cases of dehydration and heat stroke could occur during outdoor events, the hospitalisation of over 50 students was unprecedented in Churachandpur and raised serious questions about the arrangements made for the Independence Day parade.
They said the incident pointed to inadequate planning and lack of proper attention to the health and safety of the students who took part in the programme.

The student organisations urged the district administration to take measures to ensure that such an incident does not happen again.
They also warned that if adequate steps are not taken, they may consider advising schools and students against participating in events organised by the district administration.
The organisations said the safety, dignity and welfare of students should come before their participation in ceremonial programmes.
