Ukhrul, May 21: The Department of Science and Technology, Government of Manipur, organised the “Ozone Run” under the theme “Ozone For Life” at Ukhrul Headquarters on Wednesday.

Director of the Department of Science and Technology, Government of Manipur, Homila Hongrei, flagged off the “Ozone Run” as part of World Ozone Day at the Mini Secretariat Complex, Ukhrul.

Speaking on the occasion, Homila Hongrei stated, “Ozone layer depletion refers to the thinning of the ozone layer in the Earth’s stratosphere. The depletion of the ozone layer allows more harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation to reach the Earth’s surface, leading to various adverse effects on human health, ecosystems, and materials. Increased UV exposure leads to higher rates of skin cancer and can damage plant life, including crops, affecting agricultural productivity and biodiversity.”

The Ozone Run started at the Mini Secretariat Complex, Hamleikhong, Ukhrul, and concluded at Model High School, Alungtang, Ukhrul. Participants were seen carrying slogans such as: “No ozone means no outdoor fun” “Ozone depletion isn’t science fiction, it is a real life drama” “A healed ozone is a legacy for generations to come” “The Earth’s sunscreen is the ozone, let’s not break the bottle” “Save the ozone, it’s the only air-conditioning the Earth needs” “Preserve the ozone, preserve the only home we have known” “The future is bright if the ozone is tight’ “A tiny layer of ozone, a giant leap for Earth’s survival” “Ozone depletion is out of season, it’s time to act for a reason” “Protect the ozone and it will protect you” among others.
