A major tragedy was averted with the timely detection of a remote control powerful Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Manipur’s Imphal East district late Monday night.
The IED was found planted in front of a shop, Sabana Enterprises, at Khestrigao under Porompat police station of Imphal East district last night, around 11.30 pm.
Police who rushed to the spot on being informed by locals immediately called out experts of the state police bomb detection and disposal squad. They safely defused the same after a brief struggle in the wee hours of Tuesday.
Later, the remote control IED was destroyed in a controlled explosion by the bomb disposal squad around on Tuesday morning, around 9 am, a senior police officer said.
Police said that the IED was found planted in front of Sabana Enterprises owned by one Abdul Kalam Sheikh, son of late Bashiruddin of Khetrigao Mayai Leikai.
Locals said that when an unattended polythene bag was found lying in front of the shop, they immediately informed the police who confirmed it to be a remote control IED.
Police claimed that timely detection of the IED had averted a major tragedy that could have occurred if it went off.
