NNN | IMPHAL, JULY 18: Friends and admirers of Late Prof Gangmumei Kamei paid glowing tributes to the latter at his graveyard located at Maha Kabui Namching village, New Keithelmanbi along National Highway-37 near Imphal on Saturday.

People’s Progressive Council, Manipur West (PPC), in a press release issued by its chairman Namjaigai Pamei and general secretary G Kuripou, said that Prof. Gangmumei KameiProf. Kamei was an icon of history and scholar-academician and also an outstanding figure of North East. “He passed away on January 5, 2017 before his term of office as Member in North Eastern Council (NEC) expired,” said the PPC.

The PPC then said that Prof Gangmumei Kamei was twice elected to Manipur State Legislative Assembly representing 54-Nungba assembly constituency in 1995 and in 2000. “He was the cabinet minister under three different chief ministers of Manipur between 1995-2002. He was an outstanding social worker, a visionary leader and a renowned historian,” the PPC further said, adding, “He was awarded National Fellow by the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla, a pioneer patriarch of JNU, Manipur Centre and Head of Department of History and Dean of Students,” the PPC added.

Meanwhile, Prof. N Joykumar, Gaidon Kamei, Memo Singh, Chaoba Kamson and public of Nungba kendra visited the grave of Prof. Gangmumei Kamei and “paid homage and sought blessing of the departed leader for the well being of the present generation and for the success his political heir”, said the PPC.

“Paying floral tribute programme today at the memorial graveyard of Late Prof. Gangmumei Kamei will go down well in the political journey undertaken by former UNC president Shri Gaidon Kamei and laid the foundation of launching his political career,” the PPC added.

According to the PPC, Gaidon Kamei said that the unfulfilled missions and the dreams of Late Prof. Gangmumei Kamei will be carried forward by the present generation to uplift the marginalised section of the society by bringing holistic development in all sectors in the hills and the valley alike. “For the realisation of late Prof. Gangmumei’s dreams to live with respect, dignity, peace and unity among all sections of people, it is the responsibility of the next line of generation to put our ideas together to attain the political goals,” the PPC added.
