A peaceful protest in Imphal on Sunday demanded that the Manipur government sends recommendation to the Centre for inclusion of Meitei/Meetei community in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) list. The protest was staged by members of the Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee (STDC), Manipur in Imphal’s THAU Ground.

STDC has been demanding ST status for the Meitei community while asserting the community is under threat and needs constitutional protection.

Talking to reporters at the protest site, STDC general secretary K Bhogendrajit said that the committee has been demanding for the inclusion of Meitei in the ST list for the last eight years. However, he added that no new development was seen on the part of the state government.

He claimed that the majority of the community supports the demand while recalling a mammoth rally marched on the streets in Imphal on March 3, 2019.

Delay in the recommendation will happen to invite intense forms of agitation, he warned.
