SENAPATI: The Naga Peoples Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR) has reminded the Government of India to revisit its commitment to Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) as a signatory country by repealing and revoking all laws and policies that impinges human rights and its values.
Observing the occasion of International Human Rights Day 2025 on Wednesday, the NPMHR drew focus once again to the need to respect and uphold the values of human rights – dignity, equality, justice and freedom for all- as an “essential” to everyday existence.
“At this juncture where insecurity and violation of rights have crippled every layer of progress, it is all the more crucial to remember how rights shape our daily lives”, the NPMHR added.

It then said that, while significant gains have been made, the Naga people continue to have their basic rights to self determination denied.
“Tyrannical laws such as the Armed Forces Special Powers’ Act (AFSPA) of 1958 continue to be enforced in Naga areas. India’s unilateral scrapping of the Free Movement Regime (FMR), a policy that has historical fact and relevance to the rights to livelihood of Nagas living along the imposed international borders of India and Myanmar, is indicative of the real- life impact of laws and policies that do not reflect the democratic aspirations of the people”, the NPMHR pointed out.
The imposition of Protected/Restricted Area Permit (PAP) has also compounded the difficulties, it added.
