RPP proposes Nagaland Legislative Assembly to lead Stalled Peace-Talks

Dimapur, March 16: The Nagaland based political party, the Rising People’s Party (RPP), alleged today that the NDPP led Nagaland government “styled” itself as ‘facilitator’ in the Naga peace talks, though both the Government of India and the various ‘Naga political groups’ (NPGs) are not even acutely aware of their ‘facilitating’ activities. “This stalemate and the mushrooming of factions – presently 28, cannot go on indefinitely,” said the RPP in a statement.

The RPP then said it wanted to make it clear that the NPGs had their chance to settle the Naga issue. “As of now, it is ridiculous to imagine that the Government of India will conclude any meaningful agreement with the NPGs”, it stated.

The RPP then “proposes” that the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) now lead the peace-talks. “Its meaningless role as ‘facilitator’ should be bygone and the 14th NLA should undertake the serious task of negotiating with the central government on the issue of political settlement in the state,” it added.

The RPP also said the NLA is the mandated body of the people, and it is only natural and logical that the NLA empower itself to negotiate a settlement, as per the points highlighted in the “Framework Agreement” and the “Agreed Position.” In other words, the present negotiators should allow the NLA the opportunity to convince the Government of India, it suggested. Another argument in favour of NLA led peace-talks is to thwart the accusation raised from various quarters that the NDPP led government is actually impeding a solution despite its public grandstanding, the RPP also said.

“This is a pressing matter – unlike the slogan ‘opposition-less government’ which is basically a byword for money laundering”, it further added.

The RPP then said its proposal is bound to create controversy but a generational shift in outlook and policy making is required for lasting peace to hold.
