Scuffle erupts between womenfolk and Assam Rifles personnel in Lilong

Imphal: An intense scuffle erupted between womenfolk and 33 Assam Rifles personnel posted near Lilong Police Station in the wee hours of Tuesday, after the latter arrested 4 village volunteers.

Upon hearing news about their arrest, irate Meira Paibi members of Thoubal District, who were keeping vigil on roadsides, stormed the 33 Assam Rifles gate in Lilong at around 3 am, demanding the release of the arrested persons.

Assam Rifles personnel reportedly hit the women protestors with butt-stock rifles and sticks, injuring as many as 29.

The injured women protesters were rushed to Thoubal District Hospital. One 49-year-old, Th. Pakpi from Thoubal Miyam sustained a critical head injury. She has been referred to RIMS Hospital.

According to reliable sources, the Assam Rifles handed over the four arrested persons to Lilong Police Station. They were then produced before Duty Magistrate Thoubal Court and later released.
