SDTOA & SDTDU blockade; to intensify stir from Feb 23

Senapati: With no positive response from the state government about the ensuing blockade called by the Senapati District Truck Owners Association and Senapati District Truck Drivers Union, the association members had warned to intensify their stir starting from February 23 onwards.

This was stated in a press statement issued by the spokesperson of the association.

It may be mentioned that 5 drivers and handymen were assaulted on February 16 night at Sekmai in Imphal West district.

The agitation commenced on February 18 after a joint meeting held between the association and union demanding to book the culprits involved in the crime, to stop the rampant mushrooming illegal tax collections from Kangpokpi to Imphal stretch and to stop the Manipur Sand Union from collection of tax from trucks.

The district truck owners association questioned why the state government cannot bring any solution to the 5 days long agitation called by the district truck owners and drivers union till date.

According to a source received from district Police, a joint meeting with the district truck owners association and district drivers union was held, called by the district SP and Addl. SP (Highway) in the presence of SDO, DHQ in connection to the blockade recently.

The meeting stated to have requested the association and union to reconsider the blockade amidst the state unrest where supply of essential commodities is a must at this crucial time.

The district Police has mentioned to have forwarded the case to higher authorities as the blockade happens within the district whereas the incident happened outside the district.

Briefing Media persons, K. Adahrii, Spokesperson of the association expressed unhappiness to the govt of Manipur where no action is taken till date although the incident happened on February 16 last terming the incident as a life threat and attempt to murder but no positive response is given by the govt till date even after 5 days of the agitation.

The spokesperson called the inaction of the state govt as unfortunate that no culprit is arrested so far. Because of the inaction of the govt agencies till date, the spokesperson warned to intensify their stir starting from February 23 by not allowing to let any empty truck to pass along the highway till their demands are fulfilled.

The association urged the govt to see into the plight of the masses at the crucial time and take necessary action immediately. The spokesperson also asserted that the state govt will hold the sole responsibility for any eventuality occurred due to the blockade.
