UKHRUL: Sudden flash flood on Wednesday has distressed the entire farming community in Laii Village, Senapati as approximately 80,000-90,000 tins of newly planted paddy fields have completely submerged.
The Ngaorei/Laini River, which originates from Ukhrul Town and flows along the Ukhrul-Senapati border, has crossed the danger mark due to incessant rainfall. The river traverses several villages of Ukhrul, Senapati, including Laii villages, and further flows through Phek District of Nagaland before joining the Chindwin River in Myanmar.
The flood has also caused damage to the only bridge connecting Laii to Kharasom Village in Ukhrul District due to the strong river current, cutting off vital connectivity.
The Laii Village Authority Council has also noted that there is no hanging bridge for approximately 50 kms between Chingjaroi, Lower Phaibung and Laii Village. As a result, farmers and villagers are forced to risk their lives by crossing the river during cultivation and for attending social events such as marriages and festivals.

Considering the severity and urgency of the situation the council has appeal to the Government of Manipur to conduct immediate inspection and assessment of crop damage and sanction compensation to affected farmers, take up immediate repair of the damaged bridge at Laini river which connects Kharasom village and also sanction the construction of a hanging bridge between Chingjaroi village under Ukhrul, Lower Phaibung and Laii Village on priority for public safety and connectivity.
