The internet is rife with a video clip of a woman brutally manhandled, stripped off her clothes and sexually assaulted, by a gang of five unidentified persons, including a woman. However no one has been able to ascertain the identity of the victim as well as the identity of the 5 assailants. Except the victim, who appears to be from Northeast India, the assailants appearance and the language used in the video clip suggest they are from central or eastern India, as the Hindi spoken in the video clip suggest.
The video clip has been circulating on various social media groups including YouTube where some content creators have tried to score cheap points by projecting the incident as a racial sexual abuse meted out to Northeast citizens in India and that the victim is the same Naga woman, Lovikali Sumi who committed suicide in Jodhpur, Rajashtan on May 23.
However, it has immerged that the veracity of this claim has been challenged. The victim in the video clip is not the same Naga woman who committed suicide. The authority including Police are oblivious about the place and identity of the 5 assailants, including the victim in the video clip.
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju had to weigh in and said: “The viral video of a girl from North-East being brutally raped and tortured by four men and a woman, is not related to Jodhpur suicide case. I had detail discussion with the Police Commissioner of Jodhpur. However, there must be all out efforts by all State Police to catch the devils.”
Assam Police on Wednesday informed the public and shared the image of the culprits who are seen brutally torturing and violating a young girl in the viral video. It added that, the time or place of this incident is not clear. Anyone with information regarding this crime or the criminals may please contact us. They will be rewarded handsomely, Assam Police informed.
Additional Director General of Police, Delhi Police and Special Commissioner, Robin Hibu on Wednesday said that police are trying to ascertain the identities of the criminals. “We are trying to identify the culprits. Police are on the job,” Robin Hibu said. “We are trying to identify the girl, also the perpetrators for further action. The video is not related to the Naga girl suicide case of Late Lovikali Sumi of Jodhpur. The sister of the dead girl and police have verified the video, it is not the suicide girl. I have personally spoken to DCP Jodhpur,” the Special Commissioner of Delhi Police added.
The 24-year-old Lovikali Sumi’s last burial rites were performed in New Christian Cemetery Jodhpur with help from humanitarian organisations and Naveen Juice Restaurant, her employer.
