Manipur CM Warns of Strict Action Against Social Media Misuse

Imphal: Expressing concern over the rising misuse of social media platforms in Manipur, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh has cautioned users against activities that defame individuals or provoke communal tensions. He assured that the government would act decisively to maintain harmony and order.

Highlighting the growing misuse of social media to defame individuals and incite communal tensions, the Chief Minister urged users to be mindful of their actions and the impact they have on society. He specifically cautioned social media influencers, page administrators, and YouTubers against tarnishing reputations or provoking communal disharmony, adding that those found guilty would face strict legal consequences.

The Chief Minister, who also holds the Home portfolio, announced the formation of a special police team to monitor and address social media-related offences. The Police Intelligence Wing has been tasked with issuing formal notifications to create awareness and warn against such misuse.

“No one, no matter how powerful or influential, has the authority to act as the moral police or take the law into their own hands,” he said. He condemned the use of fake identities to spread animosity or incite anti-national sentiments, warning that those using fake names to create unrest would also face arrest.

The Chief Minister also took a firm stand against organizations or individuals who intimidate government officials, demand money, or unlawfully secure contracts for developmental works. He emphasized that only the government has the authority to enforce laws and maintain order.

Singh criticized the growing trend of people using social media to publicly shame others or act as self-styled authorities. “Uploading videos to defame someone or disturb personal lives will not be tolerated,” he asserted.

The Chief Minister informed that several individuals involved in vandalizing the properties of ministers and MLAs have already been apprehended, with legal action initiated against them.

While acknowledging the contributions of civil society organizations in the state, he reminded them that they too must operate within the boundaries of the law. “No association has the right to arrest, assault, or brandish weapons against others,” he stated.

Despite the challenges, the Chief Minister expressed optimism about the improving situation in Manipur. He announced the resumption of key initiatives like the “Go to Hills,” “Go to Village,” and “Meeyamgi Numit” programs, which aim to bring governance closer to the people.

The Chief Minister concluded with an appeal to the people to cooperate with the government in its efforts to restore peace and preserve the integrity and identity of Manipur. “The government is for the people and will always work to protect their interests,” he said.
