Sociology Students from St Joseph College Ukhrul Engage in Eye-Opening Exposure Trip to One Stop Centre in Ukhrul

Ukhrul: In a bid to broaden their understanding of social issues and community welfare initiatives, students from the Sociology Department at St. Joseph College, Ukhrul embarked on an enlightening exposure trip to the One Stop Centre in Ukhrul, on 3rd May, 2024.

Led by faculty members Sinawon Raising and Woryachon Mungva the excursion aimed to provide students with firsthand insights into the operations and services offered by the One Stop Centre, which serves as a critical resource hub for survivors of domestic violence and other forms of gender-based violence.

During their visit, the students had the opportunity to interact with the centre administrator, staff members and counsellors, gaining valuable knowledge about the challenges faced by vulnerable individuals and families in the community. Centre administrator of One Stop Centre, Chonchuirinmayo Luithui, briefed them on the various support mechanisms available at the centre, including legal aid, counselling services, medical assistance, and shelter provisions.

The trip also included informative sessions and discussions, where students actively participated in dialogue about the social, cultural, and legal dimensions of gender-based violence. Through engaging with real-life case studies and testimonials, they gained a deeper understanding of the complex dynamics surrounding such issues and the importance of holistic intervention approaches.

Reflecting on their experience, many students expressed gratitude for the opportunity to witness firsthand the impactful work being done at the One Stop Centre. They highlighted the importance of community-based initiatives in addressing social inequalities and advocating for the rights and dignity of all individuals.

Sinawon Raising faculty members of the sociology department emphasized the significance of experiential learning opportunities in shaping students’ perspectives and nurturing their empathy towards marginalized communities. She commended the students for their enthusiasm and engagement during the trip and encouraged them to apply their learnings in their future academic pursuits and social endeavours.

The exposure trip to the One Stop Centre in Ukhrul served as a poignant reminder of the vital role that education plays in fostering social awareness and empowerment. Through their immersive experience, the students of St. Joseph College Ukhrul have emerged not only as informed scholars but also as compassionate agents of change in their society.
