South West Garo Hills Police Bust Theft Gang, Three Arrested

Shillong, September 1: South West Garo Hills District Executive Force (SWGH DEF) has made a significant breakthrough in a series of theft cases reported over the past few months, involving both government and private properties across the region, police said today.

Based on credible intelligence, a joint inter-state raid was conducted in the Mankachar area with the assistance of Assam Police on August 29, 2025. During the raid, police apprehended one person identified as Iftakul Islam (43), a resident of Thakuranbari on the Assam-Meghalaya border. A search of his premises led to the recovery of several stolen items including batteries, copper wires, an abrasive cutting machine, and other materials uspected to be linked to multiple theft cases registered at Ampati police station. A pick-up vehicle, suspected to have been used for transporting stolen property, was also seized, the police also said.

Initial investigations suggest the accused is part of an organized gang operating across the Garo Hills region and parts of Mankachar, Assam, systematically targeting government installations and private properties, it added.
The DEF further arrested two more accused persons, Amirul Islam (23) and Shahidul Islam (26), both from Thakuranbari, today. Further investigation is on to trace more stolen property and apprehend the remaining absconding suspects, the police further said.

The district police has reiterated its firm commitment to combating organized crime and ensuring the safety and security of all residents and has called for community support in this effort.
