Imphal: Hundreds of students at the Manipur University stormed the Registrar office demanding for revocation of the show cause notice issued to Dr N Sanatomba Singh on Friday.
The students, particularly from the Manipuri department, demanded the authority to revoke the show cause notice issued to Dr Sanatomba.
Dr Sanatomba who is currently serving as an assistant professor in the Manipuri department at the Manipur University was served the notice following his alleged criticism to the government on lifting of prohibition on liquor and tourism during a speech delivered in a debating competition at the University on Sunday.
In a speech, Dr Sanatomba criticised the state government for lifting of prohibition on alcohol with an aim to generate revenue of Rs 600-800 crore per annum.

Despite the government rolled out war on drugs campaign, lifting of prohibition on alcohol shows their weakness in the campaign and it displayed how the state government unable to control the drug or alcohol menace, said Dr Sanatomba in the speech.
In a notice issued, Manipur University Registrar Prof W Chandbabu Singh stated that Dr Sanatomba delivered a speech in the debating competition criticising the state government with regard to tourism, legalisation of liquor and various other sensitive issues.
Such speech made by him in the public platform which went viral on social media has tarnished the image of the University which prima facie appears to be highly derogatory and defamatory, stated the notice.

According to Registrar Chandbabu, the decision was taken during the Deans’ Committee meeting and discussed his speech during the debating competition held at the University which violated the rules under Central Civil Services (Conduct) Rules, 1964.
“The Deans’ Committee in its meeting held on September 27 considered the matter in detail and resolved to issue a show cause notice to him before taking any necessary action as per law, if so required,” stated the Registrar.
The notice further instructed Dr Sanatomba to explain in writing regarding his speech within seven days from the date of receipt of the show cause notice and explain why disciplinary action as deem fit should not be taken against him.
