Suspected Kuki Militants Open Fire on Mongbung Meitei Village; No Casualties Reported

Jiribam: Manipur Police reported that suspected Kuki militants opened fire towards Mongbung Meitei village from Mongbung Kuki village side, leading to a firefight between local village volunteers, police, and security forces. The incident occurred at around 7:30 PM on September 14, 2024. no casualties were reported as per Police.

The swift retaliation came from the Mongbung Police picket, a team from the Commando Unit (CDO) of Jiribam, and village volunteers, engaging in a brief exchange of fire with the suspected militants. The situation was brought under control, but the area remained tense overnight, said Manipur Police.

According to a report from the Manipur Police, following the incident, a joint search operation was launched early the next morning, at around 9:30 AM on September 15, 2024, to secure the area. The search operation involved multiple security agencies, including the District Police of Jiribam, led by Superintendent of Police Shri Kh. Robinsun Singh (MPS), alongside teams from the CDO/Unit, Jiribam, and troops from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). Senior officials, including the DIG (Tech/HQ) and commanding officers from the 87th and 156th battalions of the CRPF, as well as the 39 Assam Rifles, participated in the operation.

The search covered the general area of Mongbung village, aiming to ensure the safety of the local population and neutralize any remaining threats. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, with security forces remaining on high alert.

Local officials have urged residents to stay vigilant and cooperate with the ongoing security operations as investigations continue into the attack.

No further details were available regarding the attackers or the motive behind the shooting.

According to Manipur Police, the following items which were abandoned by suspected to be Armed Kuki Militants were recovered and seized on the same day at 11:10 AM during search operation.

  8. 560 (five hundred sixty) nos. of 12 bore empty case.
  9. 11 (eleven) live rounds of 12 bore along with ammunition belt.
  10. 18 (eighteen) nos. of 8 mm empty case.
  11. 105 (one hundred & five) nos. of .303 empty case.
  12. 45 (forty five) nos. of 7.62 x 51 mm empty case.
  13. 25 (twenty five) nos. of 5.56 x 45 mm empty case.
  14. 6 (six) nos. of 7.62 x 39 mm empty case.
  15. 2 (two) nos. of .32 (7.65 mm) empty case.
  16. 1 (one) plastic carry bag black in colour containing gun powder.
  17. 1 (one) no. of safety fuse about 2 feet long.
  18. 1 (one) no. of walkie talkie set along with charger.
