Swine fever in Nagaland’s Longleng District

Dimapur, March 20: The deputy commissioner of Longleng district, Nagaland, has informed the general public that an outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) has been reported at a piggery farm in Yachem village of the district. “Laboratory tests have confirmed the presence of the viral disease, which has resulted in the death of several pigs,” the deputy commissioner also said.

To prevent the further spread of ASF, certain containment zones have been established.

In the interest of public health and animal safety, restrictions have been imposed until further notice. Restrictions include banning on movement and trade, no export and import, or transportation of pigs, piglets, pork, or pig-derived products from the infected zone.

Strict monitoring of pig farms, markets, and slaughterhouses within the surveillance zone, and any unusual pig deaths or suspected ASF cases must be reported to the local Veterinary department immediately, the deputy commissioner added. “The cooperation of the public, farmers, and meat vendors is crucial in controlling the oLongleng district, Nagalandutbreak”, the officer also said.

The deputy commissioner then warned that failure to comply with these measures may result in legal action under relevant laws.
