UKHRUL, July 5: The Tanrui Village Authority has condemned what it alleged was another attack by Kuki militants on Tanrui village on the night of July 3, saying the firing lasted for over two hours.

In a statement, the VA alleged that Kuki militants camped in the forest between Thingphai and C. Khollen Kuki villages, across the Iril River opposite Leisan (Tanrui) High School, opened fire towards Tanrui village at around 7:15 pm. It said the firing continued until about 9:30 pm.

The Tanrui VA claimed that similar incidents had taken place on several occasions in the past.

It also questioned the effectiveness of the security deployment in the area, stating that a CRPF post has been stationed at Thingphai Kuki village since the outbreak of the Kuki-Naga conflict following the Litan incident. Despite the presence of security forces near the alleged camp, the statement claimed the militants continue to operate from the area.

According to the statement, the firing took place while personnel of the Senapati Police were passing through Tanrui village. It alleged that the incident reflected the militants’ disregard for both the security forces and the rule of law.

The VA further accused the state government and security agencies of failing to act despite repeated appeals from the villagers. It said the lack of decisive action had encouraged the militants to continue carrying out such attacks.

Condemning what it described as repeated acts of terror, the Tanrui Village Authority urged the state government to immediately strengthen security measures and ensure the safety of the people of Tanrui village.
