Thuinganing Awungshi stars as Manipur rout Gujarat 6-0, qualify for semis

Imphal, September 30: Manipur cruised to a 6-0 victory over Gujarat in the penultimate Tier II Group Stage match at Railway Stadium, Jabalpur in the Junior Boys National Football Championship for Dr BC Roy Trophy 2023-24 to top the Group (A) without conceding any goal.

With the win, Manipur have qualified for the semi-finals and will square off against Group C winners Delhi on October 6 for the final berth.

Manipur secured the comprehensive 6-0 win against Gujarat courtesy a double from Thuinganing Awungshi who scored a goal each on either side of the break.

Thuinganing Awungshi also became the top scorer of the tournament with 9 goals in his name as his teammate Ningthoukhongjam remains fourth highest goal scorer with 6 goals.

Manipur opened the scoring in the 9th minute when skipper Thangjam Majaibungo converted a fine chance and Awungshi doubled the advantage two minutes before the breather.

Konsam Genius then made it 3-0 just four minutes into the second half before Laishram Suraj Singh further extended the lead to 4-0 after 54 minutes.

Awungshi then had his second at the stroke of the 90th minute before Ngangom Dhakeshwor took to honour to hit the final nail to the coffin two minutes into the stoppage time.

Manipur had started the Group campaign with a 7-0 win over Himachal Pradesh before demolishing Andhra Pradesh 6-0 and Ladakh 10-0.
