Over 50,000 Cases Pending in Tripura Courts, Including 429 Rape Cases: Law Minister

Agartala: As many as 50,000 cases are currently pending in Tripura’s courts, including 429 rape-related cases awaiting resolution, according to Law Minister and Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha. He shared these details during the winter session of the 13th Tripura Legislative Assembly on Friday in response to a question by CPI(M) legislator Nirmal Biswas.  

“As of October 31, 2023, a total of 50,268 cases are pending in the courts of Tripura, including 13,108 civil cases and 37,160 criminal cases,” the minister said. He added that 809 civil cases and 136 criminal cases are pending in the High Court, while 12,299 civil cases and 37,024 criminal cases remain unresolved in lower courts.

Highlighting a serious concern, the minister said, “A total of 429 rape-related cases are still pending as of November 25, 2023. Among these, 28 cases are in the High Court and 401 cases are in the lower courts.”

Sharing data on case resolutions, the minister stated that over the last three years, judgments were delivered in only 149 rape-related cases. Of these, 14 judgments came from the High Court and 135 from lower courts.

“In 2021, 105 rape cases were resolved, including 14 in the High Court and 91 in lower courts. In 2022, 186 cases were resolved — 14 in the High Court and 172 in lower courts. The year 2023 saw 226 cases resolved, including 22 in the High Court and 204 in lower courts,” he informed the Assembly.

Speaking about convictions, the minister said that by November 25, 2023, a total of 25 accused in rape cases had been convicted — six in the High Court and 19 in lower courts. Convictions have seen a gradual increase over the years. “In 2021, 20 accused were convicted. This number rose to 27 in 2022 and 53 in 2023,” he said.
