Tragedy Averted as Police Defuse IED in Meghalaya

Shillong, Oct 12: A major tragedy was averted on Saturday evening after police safely defused an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) that was found inside an abandoned bag placed at a private residence in Umsning, Ri Bhoi district of Meghalaya.

According to reports, around 7:30 pm on Saturday, residents alerted the police after discovering an unknown bag suspected to contain an explosive device.

Acting swiftly, the Ri Bhoi district police immediately informed the Special Bomb Squad from Shillong, which rushed to the location.

Upon inspection, the bomb squad confirmed that the bag indeed contained a positive IED, following a detailed examination, the team successfully defused the explosive device, preventing any potential loss of life or property. The defused bomb was later taken to the Umsning Police Outpost for further investigation.

Speaking to the media, Senior Superintendent of Police V.S. Rathore said that the prompt response of the police and bomb squad helped avert a possible disaster.

“After receiving the information, our team immediately reached the spot and coordinated with the bomb squad, the IED was safely defused after a thorough examination,” he stated.

The police officer further informed that unknown miscreants had planted the explosive in the private residential area and that the suspect has been identified, and efforts are underway to apprehend the culprit.

Meanwhile, an investigation is ongoing to ascertain the motive behind the act.
