Ukhrul: December 3, 2024: Three days Training Program for Spring Rejuvenation was launched successfully by Deputy Commissioner of Ukhrul Kengoo Zuringla (IAS), with participations from Tangkhul CSOs and NGOs. The training was organized with support from the District Administration and Directorate of Environment and Climate Change at DRDA Hall, Mini Secretariat Complex Ukhrul on Tuesday.
Thingreiphi Lungharwoshi, President of Tangkhul Shanao Long (TSL), extended warm welcome to the participants.
SK Ganamei from Directorate of Environment and Climate Change (DoECC,) elaborated on the roles of Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) and Tangkhul Chief Association crucial role as the custodians of land and resources.

The pilot study at Lunghar Village was successful and is now ready for upscaling. Installed at Lunghar with Swiss Technology filtration, the only one in Manipur and one in Sikkim in the entire Northeast India. He informed that Ukhrul is given priority as the starting point of the catchment of Iril (L. Phungdhar) and Thoubal rivers (Hoomi).
Volunteers for Village Development (VVD) had played an important role in spring mapping and MIKC as the local partners who implement the monitoring of springs.
Kengoo Zuringla (IAS), Deputy Commissioner of Ukhrul, appreciates ACWADAM for facilitating the training and also thanked the DoECC for the initiative to conduct pilot study. “Our lives revolve around the water and depend on springs since time immemorial. Not only for quenching our thirst but practically to enjoy the good food we eat, and to maintain cleanliness all depend on availability of water. We are endowed as Biodiversity Hotspot. We know which leaves are good for what ailment,” said Kengoo Zuringla.

“The water quality depends on the surrounding vegetation. But do We care for our Springs. Did we care about our water source while cutting trees from springhead. Do we have consideration for the environment in the conduct of our livelihood activities and business. Let’s be grateful for being blessed with good quality of water and luxurious vegetables, and let us also preserve for coming generations, ” added Kengoo Zuringla.
Jubilate Kazingmei, Program Director of VVD, recalled that “40 years back, people mock when VVD talk about environment. 30 years back, rain harvest was not taken seriously. At present, we take casually about the alarming rate of CC and the environment. Kashongra (Shirui) is the main source of water for Ukhrul Headquarters. In the beginning, we get around 27 lakh. Later, it was reduced to 14 lakh liters and currently only 6 lakh liters. We have to be conscious about our responsibilities. Ukhrul is a blessed place , let’s take up responsibilities preserve for posterity.”
Tennyson Kashung, President of Tangkhul Naga Awung Long and Jollyson RS Vice President of TNL, expressed appreciation for the initiative and encouraged to aggressively take up spring rejuvenation program in the district of Ukhrul.
