Agartala: Tripura’s royal scion and founder of the TIPRA Motha party Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma has urged citizens of Manipur to break the cycle of violence and seek collaborative solutions to the ongoing ethnic tensions. Condemning the brutalities that have plagued the state, he emphasized that the solution must come from within and not through external intervention as the unrest continues to threaten the future of the next generation.

In a video message, Debbarma highlighted the severity of the situation and reiterated his consistent stand against violence. Referring to the killing of a woman and a child he said, “I condemned this brutality on November 7 itself. Last year, I was also among the first to denounce the assault on two Kuki women. My stance is clear—any form of violence, whether murder, rape, or assault, cannot be justified, regardless of who started it. Silence on such issues only fosters more inhumanity within society.”

Debbarma expressed dismay at the blame game between communities, warning that such attitudes only deepen the crisis. “What we see now is a cycle of revenge—‘You did this, now we will do that.’ This mindset will take us backwards. People often ask, ‘Where is Delhi, where are the national parties?’ But the reality is, no one from outside will come to save us. It is the people of Manipur who must solve this issue collectively. If you rely on outsiders, the problem will only grow worse,” he said.

He criticized the lack of proactive leadership within Manipur’s political spectrum, questioning the vision of both ruling and opposition leaders. “Where is the leadership that can unite people during such a crisis? Violence will never lead to solutions—it only destroys homes, livelihoods, and futures. The real victims are the families who have lost everything. If we want to build a better tomorrow, we must stop fighting in the name of religion, tribe, or ethnicity. Only unity and collective leadership can ensure peace and progress,” Pradyot asserted.

Debbarma also touched on the historical connection between Tripura and Manipur, expressing his anguish over the state’s current turmoil. “Manipur has always held a special place in the hearts of Tripura’s people. For centuries, our states have shared cultural and historical ties. It is heartbreaking to see the land of our friends and neighbours torn apart by hatred. We must restore harmony and mutual respect to honour this shared history,” he said.

In a Facebook post before his video message, Debbarma expressed concerns over the divisive narratives being amplified through social media. He wrote, “One of the biggest problems today is the social media chatter forcing people to take sides or accusing them of bias. Murder, rape, and brutality—whether against Kuki/Zo, Hmar, or Meitei communities—cannot be justified by who started the violence first. As a leader, I want humanity to prevail above all.”

He also criticized those rationalizing the violence, calling it a dangerous trend. “It is deeply disturbing to see educated individuals justify such inhuman acts. It’s a stark reminder that our claims of being a civilized society are fragile. My only prayer is for peace in Manipur, for all communities, irrespective of their ethnic identities. This is not the future I want for our region or our country,” he wrote.
