Agartala: The Twipra Students’ Federation (TSF), a constituent body of Northeast Students’ Organisation (NESO), has voiced strong opposition to the Tripura government’s decision to lease the Maharaja Birendra Kishore Manikya Museum and Cultural Centre, formerly known as Pushpabanta Palace, to the Taj Group for the development of a luxury hotel.

In a statement, the TSF described the move as a direct affront to the cultural and historical significance of the palace, which they see as a symbol of Tripura’s indigenous identity.

While speaking with the media persons General Secretary of TSF Hamalu Jamatia said, “We are not against development or the entry of high-profile entities like the Taj Group into Tripura. However, the government must respect the cultural and emotional value attached to Pushpabanta Palace. This building is more than just a structure—it represents our history, our pride, and our community’s identity.”

The TSF acknowledged that investments like these could generate employment and attract tourism but called on the government to identify an alternative site for such ventures. “Development and heritage preservation must go hand in hand. The government should explore other locations for establishing luxury hotels without sacrificing the essence of our cultural legacy,” Jamatia added.

In response to the decision, TSF leaders held a sit-in protest outside the palace gate on Tuesday, urging the state government to reconsider. The organization has also announced plans for a larger protest rally involving members of Tripura’s indigenous communities if their demands are not met.
