SHILLONG: Following incidents in which miscreants looted, vandalised and set fire to several properties, including shops, across Tura, residents in various localities took it upon themselves to safeguard their neighbourhoods.
Reports said some anti-social elements attempted to take advantage of the volatile situation by intruding into residential areas and engaging in unlawful activities. In response, community members from several parts of Tura voluntarily remained on vigil throughout the night to protect their homes, businesses and localities.
The residents’ collective efforts were aimed at preventing further damage and maintaining peace in their respective areas during the tense situation.
Meanwhile, pet owners in Tura are facing difficulties accessing veterinary care amid ongoing tension in the town, particularly as cases of parvovirus among dogs continue to rise this season.
Several veterinary clinics and the government vet hospital in Tura remain closed due to the situation, leaving many pet owners unable to seek urgent medical attention for their animals. Owners who arrived at veterinary facilities for treatment were reportedly forced to return home after finding the clinics shut.
Pet owners expressed concern that dogs suffering from parvovirus and other illnesses are being deprived of necessary treatment. In several cases, pets requiring continuous medical care, including intravenous drips and monitoring, are unable to receive proper veterinary support.

Residents said the situation has added to their anxiety, as parvovirus is highly contagious and potentially fatal, particularly affecting puppies if timely treatment is not provided.
The ongoing tension in Tura has disrupted daily life and indirectly impacted animals that depend on timely veterinary care. Pet owners are appealing for arrangements to ensure emergency veterinary services remain accessible during the current situation.
