Tura Landslide: Three Rescued, Two Workers Killed

SHILLONG, NOVEMBER 20: Three people were rescued by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and Fire and Emergency Services following a landslide that occurred today on the outskirts of Tura at Danakgre in Meghalaya.

The incident occurred this morning when five labourers were digging a foundation to construct retaining walls when the soil above them collapsed, burying them completely.

Peniwel T Sangma, Divisional Commandant of Home Guards, Tura Home Guards Division, said the SDRF was activated at 9.30 am after he received a call from the district authority about the incident. The SDRF, in a joint operation with Fire and Emergency Services, rescued three labourers and extricated the body of one labourer.

He said another labourer had already been taken to hospital by co-workers before the SDRF and Fire and Emergency Services arrived. It was later learned that the victim succumbed to his injuries at Tura Civil Hospital.
