UKHRUL, JULY 6: Two Assam Rifles personnel were reportedly killed in an alleged ambush near Nungshang Kong (Lungshang River) in Ukhrul district on Monday evening, even as heavy gunfire and multiple explosions triggered panic among local residents.
According to information available so far, the incident occurred at around 1:30 pm while the personnel were returning to the 40 Assam Rifles’ Shangshak Battalion headquarters.
According to local villagers, intense firing and repeated explosions continued for nearly two hours in the area, located about 17 km from Ukhrul district headquarters. Farmers working in nearby paddy fields fled to safety as the gunfire intensified.

The circumstances leading to the exchange of fire and the identities of those involved were not immediately known.
Reliable sources told Ukhrul Times that two personnel of the 40 Assam Rifles, Warrant Officer Balwant Singh and Havildar C.M. Singh, who was reportedly the driver were killed on the spot.
There has been no official statement from the Assam Rifles or security authorities, and no group has claimed responsibility for the alleged ambush. Further details are awaited.
