Ukhrul Observes International Women’s Day

Ukhrul, Mar 8: The District Administration of Ukhrul in collaboration with ICDS Cell, One Stop Centre, District Project Hub for Empowerment of Women observed International Women’s Day under the theme “Accelerate Action” on Saturday at DRDA Hall, Mini Secretariat Complex, Ukhrul. It was the culminating event of the celebration of 10 years of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Scheme.

Deputy Commissioner of Ukhrul, Asish Das (IAS) stated, “We celebrate International Women’s Day 2025 to honor women’s achievements, contributions, and resilience worldwide.”

“I firmly believe that the empowerment of women is essential to building a more equitable, just, and prosperous society. Women’s empowerment is not just a moral imperative; it is also a strategic necessity. When women are empowered, they become agents of change, driving economic growth, social progress, and cultural transformation. They become leaders, innovators, and problem-solvers, making a positive impact on their families, communities, and the world at large.”

“As district administration, we are committed to promoting women’s empowerment and gender equality in Ukhrul District. We have launched several initiatives to enhance women’s education, health, economic opportunities, and social status. I am proud to report that our district has made significant progress in women’s empowerment promotion. Our initiatives have enabled women to access education, healthcare, and economic opportunities, leading to improved livelihoods and social outcomes. Despite these achievements, we recognize that there are still significant challenges to overcome. We must continue to work tirelessly to address the persistent gaps in women’s education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. We must also strive to create a society that values and respects women’s rights, dignity, and contributions.”

“I urge every citizen of Ukhrul District to join us in our mission to empower women and promote gender equality. Let us work together to create a society that is just, equitable, and inclusive, where every woman can realize her full potential and contribute to the development of our district. As the Deputy Commissioner of Ukhrul District, I pledge to continue working tirelessly to promote women’s empowerment and gender equality in our district.”

Dr. Lucy Duidang, Senior Medical Officer, in her keynote address stated, “The main aim of the BPBP is prevention of gender bias, survival and protection of the girl child and for promotion of the girl child education.”

She recalled that “the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao (BBBP) scheme was launched on 22 January 2015 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It aims to address the issue of the declining child sex ratio image (CSR) and is a national initiative jointly run by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the Ministry of Education.”

“International Women’s Day is being observed all over the world. The 2025 theme, ‘Accelerate Action,’ calls for rapid advancements in gender equality,” added Dr. Lucy Duidang.

On the occasion, the District Administration presented appreciation certificate to the Mahila Police, Ukhrul for their dedication and selfless service in the protection and for the safety of women and girls. The District Administration also awarded an appreciation certificate to Catherine Soyamphi of Soyam Products in recognition of her exemplary role in women empowerment.

The observation was attended by Dinringam Kamei, SDO Ukhrul, Roland Ningshen, SDI Chingai, Ngamreiwung Luithui, SDO LM Block among others.

Students from Echoes- School of Music Tuning Arts, Ukhrul, Shonchui Ngashangva piano recital and the performance of “Abide With Me” by Soya Tamang and Chaminao Tamang added more colour to the celebration.
