Ukhrul: Pastor Somi Kasomwoshi’s Book on Climate Change Rooted in Tangkhul Tradition released

In a profound gesture towards climate awareness, Pastor Somi Kasomwoshi unveiled his latest literary endeavor, shedding light on the intricacies of climate change through the prism of Tangkhul traditional wisdom. The book launch, graced by Rev HA Tamreingam, executive secretary of Northern Tangkhul Naga Baptist Association, took place on Sunday in Ukhrul.

Titled Answer to climate change with reference to Hao Tangkhul world view (Traditional Life), the book marks the culmination of Pastor Somi Kasomwoshi’s three-decade-long commitment to understanding and tackling global warming. Reflecting on his journey that began in 1992-1995, the pastor underscored the susceptibility of Ukhrul’s hill ranges to climate fluctuations.

Speaking passionately about the pressing issue, Pastor Somi Kasomwoshi, presently serving as a local church pastor in Ukhrul town, lamented the discernible impacts of climate change on the region. He pointed to disruptions in rainfall patterns, prolonged dry spells, and unusually scorching summers as stark indicators of environmental upheaval previously unknown to the indigenous tribes.

The pastor emphasized that the book, meticulously crafted in the Tangkhul language, seeks to enlighten his community about the evolving climatic dynamics and their repercussions on the local ecosystem. Rooted in Tangkhul traditions, the book extols the ancestral ethos of harmonious coexistence with nature, urging adherence to age-old practices for sustainable resource management.

In a fervent plea to the younger generation, Pastor Somi Kasomwoshi advocated for intensified research efforts and the production of more literature to combat the looming climate crisis. While acknowledging the absence of scientific validations for traditional practices, he underscored their inherent wisdom in natural resource stewardship.

“Though lacking scientific explanations, our customs embody a systematic approach to environmental conservation. Disregarding customary laws has precipitated severe ecological repercussions,” stressed Pastor Somi Kasomwoshi, urging adherence to ancestral norms for ecological rejuvenation.

The author’s impassioned appeal resonated with attendees, sparking a renewed commitment to safeguarding the environment through a fusion of traditional wisdom and contemporary knowledge.
