UKHRUL: Following the tragic ambush of Naga civilians on IT Road in the Kangpokpi district of Manipur, the United Naga Council (UNC), the Makui village, and the Chandel Naga People’s Organisation have voiced their strong condemnation of the act and outlined several key demands. The UNC has declared a ‘Genna’ on August 28 from 6 AM to 6 PM in all Naga-inhabited areas, prohibiting vehicular movement, the shutdown of business establishments, and government and private offices as collective mourning and homage to the deceased.
In a press release, the Makui village expressed deep sorrow over the incident in which four Naga civilians were killed by alleged Kuki militants linked to the KNF, KNF (P), and KRA, under the command of Jangboi Kipgen, Home Secretary of KNF/UPF. The villagers reported that the ambush occurred around 9:30 AM between Makui Ashang village and Thamnampa Naga village, the only lifeline for the Nagas in the region. They also identified the victims as Tadsongwibou Ringkangmai (33), Wisobou Charenamei (57), Anil Wijunamai (36), and Mariakdibou Wijunamai (36). Additionally, another civilian, Gaikamang Ringkamai, sustained injuries during the incident.

Further, the villagers have placed key demands on the government, including the arrest of the perpetrators and taking full responsibility for the safety of Naga civilians in the Kangpokpi district. They have also called upon all Naga civil bodies, student organisations, and village authorities to unite in solidarity, emphasizing that this act was not just an attack on a village, but on all Nagas living along IT Road.
In response, the United Naga Council has called for the establishment of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the matter. It has also declared a “Genna” in all Naga areas from 6 AM to 6 PM on August 28 as collective mourning and paying tribute to the fallen Naga brothers. During this period, all vehicular movement, businesses, government offices, and private institutions will remain closed, the UNC stated.
Moreover, the UNC expressed strong resentment over the complete security failure that led to the incident while also demanding immediate intervention, accountability for the perpetrators, and justice for the victims. The UNC also stated that this incident represents a calculated escalation of violence by Kuki militants, purportedly supported by unseen forces. They also termed the attack a direct challenge to the Indo-Naga peace process and to the very existence of the Nagas in their ancestral land.

The Chandel Naga People’s Organisation has also supported the UNC’s demand for immediate government intervention, prosecution of the accused, and the formation of a Special Investigation Team to verify the facts and establish accountability.

Additionally, the Naga People’s Organisation, speaking on the incident, noted that they had previously released 14 Kukis from Taphou Kuki village (on June 9, 2026) as a goodwill gesture, without causing any harm. However, they expressed concerns that the Kukis have continued to ambush and kill innocent Nagas. This situation is both unfortunate and increasingly alarming; the organization finds it baffling that such goodwill would be met with violence.
