UKHURL: The sacred seed-sowing festival of the Nagas, Lui-Ngai-Ni, was celebrated at Ukhrul District Headquarters Ground.
Delivering the presidential address, UNC President NG Lorho welcomed the distinguished gathering, including Chief Guest Neiphiu Rio, Chief Minister of Nagaland and President of NPF (Central); Guest of Honour Losii Dikho, Deputy Chief Minister of Manipur; and other legislators, tribal leaders, and dignitaries from across the Naga homeland.
Lui-Ngai-Ni, observed annually on February 15, marks the beginning of the agricultural cycle and invokes divine blessings for abundance and prosperity. Beyond its agrarian significance, the festival stands as a symbol of shared Naga identity, expressed through traditional dances, folk songs, indigenous games, and vibrant attire. This year’s theme, “Cultural Renaissance,” emphasized the revival and preservation of indigenous heritage amid growing cultural challenges.
The presence of leaders from Nagaland and Manipur was described as both emotionally and politically significant, reinforcing solidarity among Nagas across regions. The recent political developments within the NPF were highlighted as a step toward greater cohesion.
In his address, the UNC President reaffirmed the Naga people’s commitment to safeguarding their land, rights, and identity. While maintaining neutrality since the outbreak of ethnic conflict in Manipur in May 2023, he cautioned that any threat to ancestral land and history would compel a firm response.

Concerns were also raised over the proposed Indo–Myanmar border fencing, which cuts across ancestral lands. The UNC, along with ANSAM, NWU, and various Tribal Hohos, had undertaken democratic agitations leading to tripartite talks with the Government of India and the Government of Manipur. It was agreed that status quo would be maintained until mutual understanding is reached.
The President further noted that a contentious SOP on land sale and registration was revised after opposition, excluding the hill areas and addressing core concerns.
On the broader Naga political issue, he reiterated the call for an honourable and amicable settlement, urging the Government of India to act with sincerity. Expressing hope for stability with the restoration of a popular government in Manipur, he also called for resumption of dialogue on the long-pending district rollback issue.
Concluding the address, Lorho states, “as we celebrate Lui-Ngai-Ni, may our message of peace echo across every Naga homeland and diaspora. Let unity guide our actions, wisdom temper our decisions, and forgiveness shape our relationships with neighbouring communities. May the Almighty continue to bless our land and our people.”
