Ukhrul, July 30: The United Naga Council (UNC) on Wednesday appealed to all Nagas to refrain from participating in the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples by an unmandated organisation scheduled to be held on August 9 at the City Convention, Palace Compound in Imphal.

In a statement issued by its president NG Lorho, the UNC stated that it has received information regarding the hosting of International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples by unmandated organisation in the name of Indigenous people’s Forum, Manipur on August 9 in Imphal and imposed a stricture to all members of the Naga community to refrain from participating the said programme as the question of common indigeneity is being in question.

The UNC reiterated that it has time and again reminded all the tribe Hohos to refrain from attending any meeting, convention, eent, hosted/organised by unmandated organisation as it is tantamount to wilful confrontation to the aspiration of the Nagas.

“While extending our solidarity to the world indigenous communities/peoples, we urge all members of our community old and young to abstain from attending the said meeting and to prioritize the well-being and protection of our community’s rights and interests,” the UNC urged.

Any recalcitrant individual/tribe participating in the scheduled event/programme should not take the name of one’s tribe and speak on behalf of the Nagas, it warned.
