VPP Chiefs file FIR against NPP leader

Shillong: President of the Voice of the People Party (VPP) and legislator from Nongkrem, Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit has filed a First Information Report (FIR) against NPP leader and former MDC Don Sumer for accusing him of corruption during his tenure as chief executive member (CEM) of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC).

Basaiawmoit in his FIR submitted before the Officer In-charge Sadar Police Station said that Sumer had accused him of misappropriation of funds while he was KHADC chief, the clipping of his speech of which has been shown at a news channel on April 13.

Terming the allegation of corruption as false, baseless and incorrect, the VPP chief said, “By such statements made in the public domain, aspersions and vilification has been cast upon me who is also an elected member of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly and it is noteworthy to mention that such statements were made with the sole intend of defaming, maligning and spreading false, concocted and fabricated information to the public at large.”

The FIR also stated, “That the aforesaid statements amount to criminal offences under section 499 and other relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code, 1860. In the light of above, we request you take necessary action as per law, and that the burden of proof should lie with the person who made such statements”.
