WMC Urges PM Modi to Ensure Free and Safe Movement on National Highways in Manipur

UKHRUL: The World Meetei Council (WMC) on Friday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take immediate and decisive action to ensure free and safe movement of all citizens on National Highways in Manipur and restore public confidence through transparent and impartial enforcement of law. It also urged the prime minister to prevent any further deterioration of the already fragile situation in the state.

In a statement, WMC alleged that there has been no visible or effective intervention by the authorities to ensure the uninterrupted movement of civilians on National Highway-202, despite reports of a blockade along the Imphal-Ukhrul road, part of National Highway-202, allegedly by armed Kukis against the Tangkhul Nagas over the past few days.

It reminded that National Highways-102 and 37 have been out of bounds for the Meetei community since the beginning of the crisis on May 3, 2023.

It also expressed concerns over the alleged “complicity or passive conduct” by the central security forces in allowing such unlawful activities by armed Kuki groups to continue, and asserted that the role of the Army and the central security forces should be to uphold law and order impartially and to restore normalcy, not to aggravate the condition.

“These developments are deeply disturbing and warrant immediate attention at the highest level,” it stated.

Any delay in addressing these pressing concerns may have serious consequences for the state and its people.”
