Imphal, November 3: The World Meetei Council (WMC) has appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to personally intervene in resolving the ongoing crisis in Manipur, which has continued for over two and a half years.
In a letter addressed to the Prime Minister, the organisation expressed deep concern over the prolonged violence in the State, noting that more than 260 lives have been lost and over 60,000 people displaced since the conflict began. It further stated that despite the deployment of over 60,000 security personnel under the Union Government, there has been “no visible improvement” in the situation, with thousands still confined to relief camps and key highways remaining unsafe for both Meetei and Kuki-Zo communities.

The WMC also referred to the Prime Minister’s statement in the Rajya Sabha on July 3, 2024, expressing regret that “some aspects of the situation appeared to have been presented inaccurately.” The organisation said the current crisis differs vastly from earlier communal disturbances and urged the Prime Minister to “take direct control” of the issue to ensure peace and stability.
Reiterating that the Manipur crisis is not just a regional concern but a national one, the WMC said, “Allowing ethnic tensions to linger only deepens the wounds and complicates national harmony.” The council asserted that with the Prime Minister’s direct intervention, the issue could be resolved “swiftly and decisively,” and offered its cooperation to the government in finding a lasting solution.
