Working Committee LNC M Seeks Justice for Displaced Villagers of Marenmei

UKHRUL: The Working Committee Liangmai Naga Council, Manipur, has appealed for justice for the displaced villagers of Marenmei in Senapati district.

Over 370 houses in Liangmai Marenmei village have been destroyed, livestock stolen, and properties—including church assets and community storage facilities—have been ransacked. The estimated loss of property amounts to approximately Rs 6 crore.

This was confirmed by the Working Committee LNC M, along with Liangmai leaders, who conducted an official visit to Liangmai Marenmei village on December 7 to assess the situation following reports of destruction.

“The villagers were forcibly coerced and evacuated by miscreants and not sparing women; the villagers were manhandled and brutally beaten black and blue, allegedly acting under the command of one individual Achan, Former EO of the Maramthangal CAA, GPRN,” the Working Committee LNC M said in a statement.

Lamenting that the displaced villagers remain in refugee camps, deprived of their homes and livelihoods, the Working Committee LNC M appealed for justice.

“As the season of Christmas approaches—a time symbolizing love, peace, and reconciliation—it is profoundly disheartening that the people of Marenmei village cannot return to their village to celebrate in safety and dignity. The issue remains unresolved, with no amicable solution in progress,” it stated.

The Working Committee LNC M appealed for recognition of rightful ownership, restoration of justice and respect customary law and peaceful coexistence.

“Every land, hill, river, and mountain in the Naga Hills belongs to its rightful community or clan. No individual has the authority to seize land arbitrarily or alter its nomenclature to suit personal interests, the Working Committee LNC M stated, adding the rightful owners must be acknowledged and compensated for their losses.

“Forced displacement and unlawful occupation are unacceptable under both customary and legal principles… All communities must respect each other’s customary laws, historical facts, and legal rights. Dialogue, mutual respect, and lawful processes alone can ensure lasting peace,” the Working Committee LNC M maintained.

It further stated that the Working Committee LNC M and Liangmai leaders stand committed to pursuing justice for the displaced villagers of Marenmei. It also urged the authorities, civil society, and all stakeholders to act swiftly and responsibly to restore peace, dignity, and lawful ownership to the rightful inhabitants.
