World Environment Day 2025 Observed Across Tamenglong District

Ukhrul, June 5: Manipur’s Tamenglong district joined the rest of the world in observing the World Environment Day 2025 with an aim to combat plastic pollution.

Observing the 53rd World Environment Day in different areas of the district under the theme “Ending Global Plastic Pollution”, people from different walks of life participated in the event.

In Dailong village, Deputy Commissioner of Tamenglong Angshim Dangshawa; Kachamthai Faiga, CEO, ADC Tml; ZEO, and other district level officers participated in the “Ek Ped Maa Ki Naam” programme along with school children. The programme was also attended by Kh Hitler Singh, DFO Tamenglong; Joel Gangmei, Range Forest Officer Tamenglong and Johnson Khundrakpam, Range Forest Officer Tamei.

At Chiuluan village, the World Environment Day was celebrated with Chiuluan Village Authority members, school children, Tamenglong Forest Division staff and members of the Rainforest Club Tamenglong.

The event highlighted the positive and environment-conscious effort rendered by the village in protection of forests and wildlife, especially the migratory bird- the Amur falcon (Falco amurensis) locally known as Akhuipuina/Taomuanpui in Rongmei dialect.

It may be mentioned that a satellite tagged migratory bird “Amur falcon Chiuluan2” released from this village on November 8, 2024, has safely landed in the Russian Amur state and is expected to visit this village during October 2025 after the breeding season.

The programme was graced by Tamenglong Forest Division, DFO Kh Hitler Singh; chairman, Chiuluan Village MG Keiramsinang; Range Forest Officer, Tamenglong Joel Gangmei; Range Forest Officer, Tamei, Johnson Khundrakpam; Chiuluan Village Secretary, Namchei Gangmei, and Rainforest Club, Secretary, Ramhiamang Gonmei as presidium members.

A brief awareness programme on environmental protection was held at the community hall and a tree plantation programme was also launched in Chiuluan village.

The Eco Club, Trinity Public School (TPS) in collaboration with Rainforest Club Tamenglong also organized the event at the school premise under the theme “Ending Global Plastic Pollution”. Painting competition for students and tree plantation were the major highlights of the day. Mordecai Panmei, Director, RCT addressed the participants on plastic pollution in Tamenglong district. The gathering pledged to combat plastic pollution for a healthy environment.

Also joining the World Environment Day 2025 observation, the District Hospital Tamenglong observed the day under the theme “Ending plastic pollution” organized by National Programme on Climate Change and Human Health and District Health Society Tamenglong at the District Hospital Complex, Tamenglong.

Led by Dr Majachungliu, CMO Tamenglong and Guidiathiu Kahmei, Medical Superintendent of District Hospital Tamenglong, the World Environment Day 2025 observation at district hospital was observed with the slogan “Beat plastic before it beats us”.

Speaking on the occasion, CMO Tamenglong Dr Majachungliu urged the public and patients to avoid littering plastic wastes in the hospital premises. She also appealed to the public to put plastic wastes in dustbins.

In connection with the World Environment Day 2025, the district hospital medical staff, including medical officers, nurses and other staff, carried out tree plantation drives at the hospital complex.
