Zomi Student Body Seeks Governor’s Intervention to Halt Recruitment Process

UT DeskChurachandpurMarch 13, 2024

Churachandpur: The Zomi Students’ Federation (ZSF) has written to Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey, urging her intervention to halt the rampant recruitment process in the state.

The rampant recruitment amid the ongoing violence, which has torn apart Manipur, as the ZSF says, has exacerbated discrimination against the Zo ethnic tribe.

The ZSF pointed to the case of a recently conducted recruitment process/examination of the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED), Section Officer Grades I and II posts. For the written examination, the only examination center in the hill districts was conducted in Senapati, a Naga-dominated district in the state, it said.

The recruitment process was initiated and completed; however, the ZSF alleged that “the recruitment results declared on March 8, 2024, showed that the twenty-nine ST reserved seats were devoid of any ‘Zo’ candidates.”

“The entire recruitment process and subsequent results constitute a significant violation of our Fundamental Right to Equality of Opportunity in Matters of Public Recruitment (Article 16),” stated the ZSF in a representation submitted to the Governor.

The Zo student body also conveyed to the Governor that it is seeking legal remedy to end the discrimination and is in the process of initiating legal proceedings. Furthermore, the ZSF demands an immediate halt to all recruitment processes in the state.

The ZSF also appealed to higher authorities than the state government to intervene in the matter and prevent the state government from discriminating against one section of Indian citizens in favor of another.
