Ukhrul, Feb 20: To commemorate the 113th birth anniversary of Maj Bob Khathing Ralengnao, the 18 Assam Rifles under the aegis of 10 Sector, Somsai is organising a series of sports events at Ukhrul Headquarters.
Brigadier Sandeep Singh, SM, DIG 10 Sector Somsai on Thursday, officially kick off the Maj Bob Khathing Sports Tournament scheduled in Ukhrul Headquarters with effect from 20-27 February 2025.

Brigadier Sandeel Singh (SM) cut the ribbon to mark the events in the presence of Reisangmi Vashum, former national football player. Flaming and lighting of torch was done by Reisangpemmi Kasomwoshi, former national football player who holds the record of being the youngest player to score a goal in the Federation Cup in 2010.
The opening ceremony was also attended by Ashish Das (IAS), Deputy Commissioner of Ukhrul, Padma Shri recipient Guru Rewben Mashangva and other host of dignitaries.
Born on 28 February 1912 in Ukhrul, Manipur, Late Maj Bob Khathing Ralengnao began his military career by joining the British Army during World War II and served with distinction in the 19th Hyderabad Regiment. Maj Bob Khathing Ralengnao was part of the V Force operations in Manipur and was recognized for his exceptional leadership and bravery, earning prestigious honors such as the Military Cross (MC) and the Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).

He also played a pivotal role in peacefully bringing Tawang under Indian Administration in 1951, an expedition carried out in consultation with Assam’s then Governor Jairamdas Daulatram. Beyond his military achievements, Major Khathing also excelled in civil and diplomatic affairs—he served as a member of Manipur’s first Legislative Assembly and later became India’s first tribal Ambassador to Burma (now Myanmar). A recipient of the Padma Shri, Maj Bob Khathing Ralengnao passed away on 12 January 1990, leaving behind a legacy of unwavering dedication to India’s territorial integrity and regional harmony.

Every year, to celebrate the birth anniversary of Late Maj Bob Khathing, the Assam Rifles organizes a sports tournament in Ukhrul Headquarters. This year, on the occasion of his 113th birth anniversary , 18 Assam Rifles under the aegis of 10 Sector, Somsai is hosting a series of sports events in Ukhrul from 20–27 February 2025. The 5th Edition of Baby League Football (U-12), the 10th Edition of Women’s Volleyball and the 11th Edition of Men’s Football Tournament.
The opening ceremony witnessed the special performance by Guru Rewben Mashangva and others. In the opening match, reigning champion Hunphun Phungcham Football Association (HPFA) defeated Semka FC by a score margin of 7-0. A glut by Rungsing Muinao (Jersey No. 9) and a goal each by Worchuipei (Jersey No. 11) and Nimreiyo (Jersey No. 10) helped HPFA to earn a solid 3 point at the ongoing league match.
