1st District Level Fish Carnival held at Purul village, Senapati District

Senapati: Purul Youth and Student Organization (PYSO),  in collaboration with the Department of Fisheries, Govt. of Manipur organized the first ever Fish Carnival amongst the hill districts of Manipur at Purul  village under the sponsorship of National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB), Government of India from 25th -26th November, 2022. The Additional Director of Fisheries, Govt. of Manipur Khamsing Ahum graced the event as the Chief Guests while Dailord Pao, President, Poumai Naga Union was the Presiding Officer, Dorothy M.S from NFDB and Ingoba Singh were the guest of honour. The event witness more than 700 footfalls with 25 fish stalls and sold more than 1000 kg of local organic fish.

The main objective of the event was  to promote fish as healthy food and encourages more fish consumption for nutritional security.

Speaking on the occasion, chief guest of the event, Khamsing Ahum, highlighted on the huge gap of fish production in the State. He urged the hill district farmers to cultivate fish and contribute to fish basket of the State.

Dailord Pao, the presiding officer lauded the organizers and the villagers of  Purul for spearheading the initiative and  hosting the first fish festival. He said that the carnival would encourage aquaculture and facilitate towards economic upliftment in the region.

Ingoba Singh, the District Fishery Officer of Senapati promised that the department will extend its best assistance to promote and usher development of fisheries in Senapati District.

Dorothy M.S  in her speech highlighted about the various activities of NFDB and urged the fish farmers to register under Group Accident Insurance Scheme (GAIS) and avail its benefit. She lamented about the defunct fish hatchery at Purul being established by the Department of Fisheries and appealed the department to renovate the farm and utilize it to the fullest.

The carnival witness fish farmers competing for best stalls and best fish cuisines. Events of attraction includes buyers- sellers meet, live kitchen of different fish cuisines, traditional fish catching, camping and campfire.
