2 Nagas kidnapped, held hostage at gunpoint; Zeliangrong Students’ Union Manipur condemns

The Zeliangrong Students’ Union Manipur (ZSUM) has said it is deeply anguished by the “terrifying, brutal and heinous incident of kidnapping of two Zeliangrong Nagas, who were taken hostage at gunpoint [firing few rounds] by the suspected Arambai Tenggol at Ngangkhallawai oil pump in Bishnupur district.

ZSUM said the two Zeliangrong (Naga), Giangjilung Rongmei S/o Borouchao Rongmei from Khoupum Satudai, Noney District; and Jeanguanglung Malangmei S/o Pouguilung Malangmei from Bitiang Village, Laphok, Noney District were kidnaped and taken to Moirang on Tuesday at 5 pm.

The Zeliangron Student body alleged that the duo were threatened to be killed, beaten black and blue as well as all their valuable belongings estimated to be around two lakhs were seized, including Rs 21,000 in cash by the abductors, adding that the duo needed immediate medical attention.

“The Zeliangrong Students’ Union Manipur condemned in the strongest term and we are not able to tolerate such acts therefore, any unwanted circumstances happen related to this issue is out of our organization. We have made several appeals to the government and concern authorities to investigate the matter but there is no positive respond. The situation compels us to take up necessary steps to encounter adversaries to safe guard our integrity, rights, and freedom. We are running out of words to show our discontent therefore, we have no option left to subside and remain silent. While the lawlessness of the State Manipur could lead to further division of the communities in Manipur,” a press release issued on Tuesday stated.

Further, the ZSUM stated that the GoM requires reassurance of the people of their safety and security on an urgent basis.

“We also strongly call upon the government to take up necessary measure to contain the infectious ethnic violent. The increase of unchecked armed activism in the state is alarming and letting their free operation in the State cause insecurity of the public. The GoM should take an accountability related to this incident and must compensate victims for the lost as an indemnity,” it maintained.

ZSUM also appealed to all the Naga CSOs and concerned Naga people to stand up against the said incident, showing their unity, solidarity, and strength.

Meanwhile, the Tangkhul Katamnao Long Imphal (TKLI) has said it stands united in condemnation following the deplorable act of kidnapping of Tamreingam Shithung S/o Chingmi Shithung of Bungpa Khullen at Mantripukhri, Imphal on January 29, 2024 by armed miscreants.

“The heinous abduction in broad daylight violates the very fabric of our society. The TKLI vehemently denounce such reprehensible actions and extend our deepest sympathies to the victim and the family during this sorrowing ordeal. We call upon law enforcement agencies to swiftly and rigorously pursue all avenues of investigation to insure the safety of victim’s family and bring those involved to justice. Together, we will stand strong against the forces of darkness and uphold the values of decency, compassion and justice that define our society,” TKLI condemnaiton note issued on Wednesday stated.

TKLI has also urged people in the Manipur to refrain from such inhumane act in future but to spread love, peace and harmony in the state.
