2nd Cities Summit of Tangkhuls in Indian cities held in Mumbai

Mumbai: The 2nd Cities Summit of the Tangkhuls from various cities of India was hosted by Tangkhul Welfare Society Mumbai on Oct 26 and 27 at The Retreat House, Bandra Mumbai. The Summit was held under the theme ‘The challenges of social malaise in contemporary society’ was participated by 9 cities with a total of 30 delegates. Resource person Dr. Ngazekmi Vashum, Asst. Prof. of Institute of Banking and Personnel Selection (IBPS) presented and highlighted important issues such as political instability, disadvantages of technological advancement, poverty and lack of equitable distribution of resources and various remedies were suggested.

Former MLA 44 AC Ukhrul Manipur, Alfred Kanngam Arthur graced the 2nd Cities Summit as the chief guest.

Speaking at the summit, Alfred talked about how disconnected the Tangkhul people are from reality and blinded by dreams. Delving into the much needed Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) Bill, recommended by the Hill Areas Committee (HAC), and how it benefits and why it is a must for the hill people, he also gave an insight into the current political scenario. The former MLA encouraged the city leaders to be proactive and initiate collaborative projects.

Tangkhul Katamnao Long president, Ramreichan Keishing shared a brief idea about bridging the gap between the Tangkhul community living in cities and people back at home. He stressed about having a common goal and the importance of collaborate on important projects for the benefit of the Tangkhul society in general. Somipam Vashum, president of Raphei Katamnao Long encouraged the city unions and leaders to look after the youths migrating to different cities, recommending to provide proper guidance to freshers.

Exhortation under the topic Leadership was shared by Rev. Dr. Gleever Lungleng on the second day of the summit. He quoted Hebrew 13:17 and talked about the sacrifice of a leader and emphasized on how a leader should lead with action. “Being a Christian and leading a Christian community a leader should first check their own spirituality,” added Dr. Gleever Lungleng.

The summit had a long discussion hours with the agenda regarding strengthening relationship between cities union, future initiatives and collaboration. In order to pursue and be more vibrant with the summit, the leaders agreed to work toward securing a common platform for all the cities.
