Police in Imphal have arrested at least seven persons who shouted various slogans lauding separatist leader Narengbam Samarjit on his arrival at Imphal Airport, sources said on Tuesday.
Samarjit who was arrested by NIA in New Delhi on March 25 last was brought to Imphal on Monday.
On his arrival at the airport, some people at the airport shouted various slogans like “Long live Manipur”, “Victory to Samajit”, etc. while a police team escorted him from there.
Following the incident, police on Tuesday picked up three persons allegedly involved in shouting slogans which, according to the police, is tantamount to encouraging Samarjit’s move of declaring Manipur’s independence from India and formation of Manipur government in exile in London.
They were picked up after a case in connection with the incident was lodged at Singjamei police station of Imphal West district, the source said.
Samarjit who is claimed to be the minister of external affairs and defence minister of “Manipur State Council”, “government in exile” in London formed on October 30, 2019 was arrested by the NIA from Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi on March 25. He was brought to Imphal by the NIA after taking transit remand from remand at Patiala Court, Delhi on on Monday.
