Imphal: Protesters today had a heated argument with the police who tried to disperse a sit-in-protest staged under the aegis of Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System (JCILPS) in Imphal today.
As announced earlier, the JCILPS organized the sit-in-protest in Imphal’s Keishampat Junction as part of pressing the state government of Manipur to implement Inner Line Permit (ILP) system effectively.
Leaders and members of various civil society organizations took part in the protest which police tried to foil at the beginning.
The police alleged that the protest should not be staged as no prior permission was obtained from the competent authority as the whole of Imphal West district is under CrPC 144.
However, leaders of the JCILPS and other organisations argued that the protest was being staged in a peaceful manner and it would not affect the maintenance of law and order. Despite the strong resistance from the police, the protest was, however, continued till afternoon.
