Senapati: Loyola School, Liyai organised tree plantation around its school campus in collaboration with Senapati Forest Division on the last day of 73rd Van Mahotsav. The plantation program was also accompanied by Thaikho Peter, Ex-ADC member, Liyai DCC and Benjamin, Forest Ranger, Liyai Range and other Forest department officials.
Fr. Joram, principal of the school in his welcome note spoke on the importance of planting trees and care for life giving trees by spreading awareness to all general public as he urged all the students to act as climate activists in their lives as they grow up.

Rakovei, a class VII student of the school in his address stated that the need for food, water, shelter and other things depend on the environment around us all. Human society is playing a adverse role in degrading the natural environment which is affecting badly on the lives of the planet including pollution, over population, waste disposal, climate change, global warming and green house effects. Due to human activities, the planet has reached unsustainable level which should be a grave concern of all, and responsibility to lower the loss urging all to work together towards a greener and more sustainable future.

Speaking on the occasion, D. John Sha, MFS, Divisional Forest Officer, Senapati Forest Division stated that the Senapati Forest Division had organised tree plantation in a big way right from the first of July till the last day. Similarly, mass tree plantation was also reported to have organised at Makhel village in the district. The department is stated to bring awareness to the people through plantation at different places of the district. Plantation and protecting the environment has become very important for all citizens, adding, tree plantation, and to take care it is not only the duty of the forest department but each and everyone is responsible. The Divisional Forest Officer of the district also talked about the importance of one tree and its worth amounting to huge amount of money per tree.

The DFO then called the village a blessed village for its abundant water source from ancient water spring till date. Such abundance of water is because of preserving the forest, said the official. While urging all to preserve forest, the DFO stated that reverse outcome for not preserving the forest causes drought, flood and other natural disasters. Preserve the forest and environment before such curse from the nature reach a place, the official said. The DFO also mentioned that preserving forest and environment is the only way to get sufficient water at a place. Forest gives not only water and clean air but provides good soil, nutrients, etc., making the soil fertile for cultivation. As the population increases, demands from forest products increases day by day, hence it is vital to realise the need to protect forest and environment before one’s life become a threat, added the DFO.
More than 200 tree saplings were planted under the theme, “One student, one tree.”
