Chandel, April 11: The 2nd edition of Run Chandel Run (Chandel mini marathon) was held on Tuesday after a hiatus of 3 years under the theme Chandel unites for drug free society and healthy lifestyle. A total of 520 enthusiastic runners participated in over 5 categories – Under 16 (Boys & Girls), Above 40, and Open (Men & Women).
The mini marathon aimed to promote ‘Fit India Movement’ and ‘War on Drugs 2.0’ by uniting people of Chandel for a drugs free society and healthy lifestyle was jointly organised by 21 Assam Rifles (Modi Battalion), District Sports Association (DSA) Chandel, Wisecrabs (The brainchild of Run Chandel Run), Royal Riders Chandel and Chandel District Administration.

The 10 Km race for Open category (Men & Women) was flagged off from Heibunglok village by Brigadier Vedpal Yadav, DIG 26 Sector Assam Rifles and Chinglensana Singh, Arjuna Awardee (2019), former Indian Men’s Hockey captain and Olympian (Rio 2016). This category also saw the participation of Mayanglambam Rajkumar (DC Chandel) along with other District Level Officers.
The 5 Km race for Under 16 (Boys & Girls) and Above 40 years was flagged off by Somorjit Singh IPS (CO 8 MR) from Leikun gate. The Under 16 category saw massive participation from Government and private schools of Chandel. The village clubs and general populace lying on the marathon route provided water and other necessary helps to the runners during the course of the race.

The run for all categories concluded at Maha Union Government Higher Secondary School, Japhou, where the official prize distribution cum closing ceremony was held. The ceremony was made memorable by the special performance of 21 AR band, Johny Dilbung, and Thaniwar (singer, official marathon song).

According to a press release from Assam Rifles, the event was organized to promote fitness, health and well-being amongst the local populace, especially the youth; Also aimed to raise awareness about the negative impact of drugs on society and promote physical activity as a part of a healthy lifestyle.
Speaking about the event, Chinglensana said, “It was an honor to flag off the ‘Run Chandel Run’ mini marathon 2023. I am grateful to the organizers for giving me the opportunity to be a part of this noble cause. I hope that the message of the marathon reaches far and wide and inspires people to lead a healthy and active life.”
In his closing remarks, Brigadier Vedpal Yadav, SM, DIG 26 Sector Assam Rifles thanked all the participants of Chandel for their enthusiasm and dedication to the cause. He reiterated the commitment of Assam Rifles in promoting fitness and healthy living among the citizens of Manipur and urged everyone to join hands in fight against drugs.

The organizers and local populace provided the runners with water stations enroute and refreshments post run. Medical cover throughout the route was provided by Assam Rifles and Chief Medical Officer, Chandel. The event also witnessed local artists showcasing their talent at the Closing Ceremony.
