Imphal: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who is also the convener of the North-East Democratic Alliance (NEDA), arrived in Imphal on a day long visit to the strife-torn Manipur on Saturday.
On his first visit in the state since the violence unfolded on May 3, Sarma met with his Manipur counterparts at the chief minister’s secretariat in Imphal and discussed the present unrest in Manipur.

He is the first CM from the northeast region visiting the state after the violence broke out in the state.
Later, Sarma held a meeting with leaders of some civil society organisations at Hotel Classic Grande in Imphal. He also met with some of the BJP MLAs of the state before leaving Imphal for Guwahati in the evening.

What had transpired in the meetings could not be ascertained till the time of filing this report.
Earlier, on his arrival at Imphal Airport, Sarma was accorded a warm-welcome by Manipur BJP chief A Sharda Devi accompanied by state CAF and PD minister L Sushindro and MLAs – S Kunjakeshore and Kh Ibomcha.

The Assam chief minister’s visit in the state was in less than two weeks after Union home minister Amit Shah’s visit to the state to take stock of the crisis unfolding in the state.
The state is reeling under severe breakdown of law and order after the ethnic conflict between two communities erupted on May 3 last.
